Back on the Ranch

Walker Ranch finds new ways each time I'm there to beat me like a sickly, horn rimmed bi-speckled, skinny nerd.  The beating tool of choice is usually the weather with high winds, snow, rain, and/or sleet (Shaun referred to it today as the Bermuda Triangle).  When she lures me in with hopes of good weather, the beating follows more of an incline nature.  The loop is all uphill, like Escher Stairs.  It lures you into a fast pace then knocks you down when it's too late to pace conservatively.

Shaun and I headed out to Walker today for redemption on our run there last week where we were treated to face-stinging wind and snow while Boulder proper basked in sun and warm temps.  So, we over dressed this time.  It was near perfect on the endless uphill loop, no wind, pleasant temps.

I did three laps in 1:12, 1:16, 1:14 with an extra out and back to retrieve discarded clothing to round out the run at 24 miles for me.  One gel and 20 oz water for the entire run.  Yes, I was hallucinating on the third lap.  Shaun banged out two laps in impressive times, getting stronger each week!

So, my week was 74 miles in just 5 runs.  40 miles in the last 24 hours.

  1. You have to love those perpetual ascent runs - why does it seem Colorado has so many? Good running Tim - glad you had the upper hand today!

  2. Which way do you usually go clockwise or counterclockwise? Clockwise always seems much harder and more uphill to me. Counterclockwise not as much.

  3. Nick. I ran counterclockwise the first two laps. I definitely think clockwise is easier. Personal preference? Who knows.

  4. The gradual uphill (after the very steep hike-up) on the far side aways gets me going clockwise. Along with the last climb which can be pretty hot and exposed.

Probably partly personal preference - it is the same gain both ways so it 'should' be the same either way.

  5. I think it's one of the best training grounds around here. I keep telling Shaun (new to ultras) that if he can get somewhat comfortable and proficient running Walker that nearly any 50k will be cake.

When I dragged him back out (way out) to retrieve my discarded over-clothes he kept loudly proclaiming, "God, my ass hurts! Man, my ass is killing me!" all while holding both cheeks with his hands every time we went uphill. It was a little disconcerting. I was like, "yeah, it was a good workout. please be quiet."

  6. 40 miles in 24 hours? Are you going after your record of 240 miles in 40 days?

  7. It was 217 miles in 42 days (that record will stand for centuries). I'm right on the edge of matching Anton's 740 miles for January. I just need to run about 450 miles today.
