Compression Thoughts

That's thoughts about compression clothing, not compressed thoughts, whatever...

I'm sitting here writing this while wearing McDavid compression socks after a 12 mile run.


I’m obviously not a scientist or doctor but I am a runner who enjoys running very long distances.  These are thoughts put into my own words, so they are simply the way I view how it works, not some scientific study I did in my kitchen.  It’s real.  It’s tangible.  It’s a process.

I only support or otherwise talk about products that I truly believe help me perform at my potential while staying as comfortable and injury-free as possible.

During events the core benefits of McDavid compression products are the stabilization of muscles and increased circulation. Repetitive shaking or oscillation of muscles is reduced.  With each stride the muscles contract/engage and then relax.  Upon foot strike the leg suddenly stops and the muscle keeps moving with inertia then snaps back as it contracts.  Repeating this several hundred (thousand) times over the course of a long run puts increased stress on the muscle itself and the connective tissues where the muscle attaches to the bone, resulting in micro tears and waste product in the muscle cells, which we feel as post activity soreness.

Reducing the unnecessary oscillation and vibration movement of the muscle enables it to work more efficiently and provides enhanced comfort and performance over longer periods of time.

The breakdown of running form is an unavoidable component of running long distances.  Early in workouts or races the runner has all the energy, efficiency and strength that enables good form and a springy stride where all the main muscles and stabilizing muscles are working effortlessly in unison.  Once fatigue sets in form falls apart, hips swing out, knees collapse and twist inward and ankles pronate at increasing angles.  Reducing the micro tears and promoting circulation offsets the fatigue, enabling a more comfortable, natural stride for longer periods. Improving economy means better efficiency and using less energy.

Compression benefits don’t end when the run ends.  Recovery begins.  Regarding nutrition, it’s widely known that recovery must begin as soon as possible after a workout or race.  Athletes benefit most by replacing carbohydrates, proteins, and electrolytes within 30 minutes after exertion ends.

This holds true for compression used in recovery as well.  Immediately following exercise full length compression pants reduce muscle and joint swelling and increase circulation, which helps flush out waste products from muscle cells and facilitate the healing process.  This in turn reduces soreness and speeds recovery, enabling a faster return to activity.

This V12-powered super dune buggy gets on the list — well, my list anyway — purely because of its appalling clientele. The "Rambo Lambo" was the civilian version of a military vehicle that Lamborghini sold to those beacons of democracy, Saudi Arabia and Libya, among others. The luxurious LM002 appealed to spoiled young Saudi sheiks wanting to cross the sand to survey their oil field holdings. Uday Hussein, son of Saddam, had one, which the U.S. military cheerfully blew up in 2004 during a "test" to simulate the effects of a car bomb. The LM002 is the forerunner of another large and unnecessary SUV that signals pure contempt for one's fellow man, the Hummer H2. Read on.

Race Report: Deadman Peaks 50 Mile

I enjoy running in New Mexico. Something about the landscape, so vast, colorful, tenacious, yet fragile makes it seem like a charismatic familiar friend.

I had my eye on the Deadman Peaks 50 mile trail run for a long time. It was relatively close (8 hr drive), fell on a time frame when events are becoming scarce, and was intriguing since it's all on the Continental Divide Trail in a remote location that, in Race Director Jim's words,"sees about 20 people total a year." Unfortunately, for me, the race sold out quickly.

About ten days before the race I was floundering with an ankle still sore from the Bear 100 race but eager to get back out for another race. I was already registered for the Antelope 100k on Nov 6th but I'm impatient and wanted something in between, so I contacted Jim and asked him to let me know if a spot opened up. He emailed me right away and said I was in. I hadn't lost a lot of fitness but I had definitely lost strength and power. I was a little concerned the week of the race that the weaknesses would expand and become a problem like most weaknesses are summoned and exploited in long races. Regardless, I felt I could get through the distance and at least enjoy a day in the desert while preparing for the 100k two weeks later.

The trip to New Mexico saw everything from snow to warm sun.

When I arrived in Cuba NM I had some time to kill, so I headed over to the race start where I planned to sleep in my car. I met John a BLM Ranger (these guys make real cops look like sissies). He was there surveying the "parking lot", which was merely scrub brush covered desert on either side of a rough dirt road. It had been raining off and on all week there and was sprinkling while I was there talking with John (likely the only five days that see rain out of the calendar year, very rare). Considering the rain and the low temps in the 30's, I opted to check out the cheapest motel in Cuba. Not a difficult thing to do since any motel in the town is lucky to have a semblance of a paved parking lot. I settled on the Cuban Motel. I was dry and warm, which would likely be the only selling points on any brochure they may have.

I went to the packet pick-up/pasta dinner. The food was good and a representative from the Continental Divide Trail Association presented a slide show about the trail with some terrific photos. I chatted with a couple of other runners (one from Calgary Canada) and headed off to Cuban Motel paradise.

I barely slept, mostly because I was getting worried about my ability and fitness and I didn't want to embarrass myself with a DNF or another miserable showing like the North Fork 50 in July. Though, once I started getting ready in the morning I felt the adrenaline forcing out the doubt and replacing it with an eagerness to run.

The start was pitch black at 6am with thick clouds blinking out the full moon, so headlamps were imperative. We got started for about 1.5 miles on the dirt road then abruptly turned off into desert with no trail, just a fair amount of flagging. Still, we were making good time and into a nice flow. There were four of us at that point, which dropped to three about 5 miles into the race. At the first aid station at mile 9 the two guys I was running with stopped and I just yelled out my number and kept going. That was the last time I'd run with any others.

I usually get into a zoned-out groove for miles on end in these events but the trail, rocks, cliffs, sand, mud, bushwhacking, and path finding kept me focused. It remained cold for most of the day, so I kept my gloves on for all but about an hour of the race. The nice part about the coolness and cloud cover is that I only drank about 7 oz per hour, so I was able to run the entire race with just the 60 oz in my hydration pack.

I kept expecting someone, mostly Brooks, to catch up to me and sometimes even hoped someone would so I'd have a little company. I was holding a good pace, running every step.

I reached the mile 21 (actually mile 23, I'm guessing - the course is 54 miles) aid station, which took a solid two hours since the mile 9 aid station, so you better have some supplies to make it from one to the next! I ran straight through that aid station as well, just pausing long enough to say hi to Susan Reynolds, the Race Director of the Ghost Town race I barely won in a sprint finish last year in Hillsboro, NM.  I hadn't seen her since the race, so it was a pleasant surprize to have her there helping out a fellow RD.



From there it took me 41 mins to get to the turn around point where I just grabbed the gels I had in my drop bag and was back running in less than 20 secs. It took me just 38 mins to get back to the 21 mile (now 29 mile) aid station, so I knew I was going to have a good run back. I was able to gauge my lead at the turn around. I had just 4 mins on Brooks and 10 mins on the third guy. I was determined to push hard to avoid a sprint finish.

I encountered two low points, one was the first wave of pain that always seems worse than the rest and the second was likely due to dehydration since I ran out of water 2.5 hours from the finish. Instead of just plodding along like I normally would in rough patches, I kept running. I learned this from Bear 100 where I realized it actually didn't help by slowing down and often made matters seem/feel worse. I had to jump over a tarantula, which made my heart skip (and I may have let out a girlish yelp...).

For the last 10 miles of the race I kept looking over my shoulder (something I almost never do). I had it in my head I would win since mile 20 and wasn't going to let someone creep up on me. As it turned out, I had put substantial time on everyone over the last 27 miles. I finished in 8 hrs 55 mins (gives one the idea of length and difficulty of the race). And Brooks came in second 31 minutes after me.

It began to pour rain with cold, strong winds driving it, so I felt for the folks with a lot of time left in their race. I changed into my McDavid compression pants and some comfy clothes and drove home. Thanks to Happy Trails for watching (spoiling) Pippit.

Jim Breyfogle did a superb job putting on his first event. It had a good mix of structure and spartan-ism to it. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a first 50 miler but I'd certainly give it the thumbs up for anyone looking for a full day of challenge and fun. Jim gives 100% of race profits to Pancreatic Cancer Research and Support. It's the disease that took his grandfather's life. I met and had a nice chat with Jim's grandmother, who came all the way from Ohio to help with the event.

Favorite Things

Getting bored writing about my plodding around in running gear, so I'm writing about running gear!


Specifically, I'd like to know what the top three favorite things are in running.  It doesn't have to be limited to "gear" like shoes, watch, etc.  It can be a favorite gear but it can also be anything that you really appreciate about running.  Here's mine:


1.  When I feel light and have a fluid stride because it reminds me that we are all athletes regardless of our level.


2.  During a run writer's block doesn't exist.  Every thought is formulated in clean, expressive sentences.


3.  I like being detached from humanity.  I'm not tethered to anything or anyone when I'm out on the trails.


What are your three favorite things in relation to running?  Jennifer Connelly is my 4th.

Projecting



Relating back a few posts to a comment I made about my mother telling me not to wish my life away, I'm projecting myself into next year already.  I've decided this is a defense mechanism when things aren't going so well.  Only three weeks after my last race (seems like years now) and my patience with the soreness of my front ankle tendon thingy was wearing translucent thin.  Run 3-4 days straight, take two off, try again, off, etc.  Common sense perspective tells me that just three weeks since crushing my body for over 100 miles should warrant leniency...  With the 50 miler and 100k races both looming in the next 6 and 20 days I was at my end of being patient.  30 minutes into every run my ankle began hurting and got progressively worse, so I've been relegated to 7, 8, 10 milers mostly, with two 15 milers dotted in over the last two weeks.  Looking at the tiny notebook I use as a log (I've given up trying to use an official log online), I realize I've likely maintained most of my fitness while giving my body an opportunity to heal and give my mind that drive to race that is so helpful when the body starts hurting and wanting to stop after a few hours of running.  The mind's like, "hey, excuse me, but we're in a race currently.  I suggest we push a little harder, so we can be done sooner."  The body, like Lenny in Of Mice and Men, simply agrees because there aren't any thoughts formulated to oppose this logic.

So, after backing out of a run with a friend yesterday, I decided to run solo, so I could assess the leg without being pushed or obligated to run a specific distance.  30 minutes passed, no pain, optimism creeped in.  45 minutes and things were going well, no pain, and actually a fluidity and rhythm I haven't been able to find for three weeks emerged into my stride.  And I was happy.  Running through farmland single track with the morning sun warming the crisp air and views of white-capped mountains hunched up behind the lower, dry foothill mountains, just running with no other thoughts than the moment, like meditation with movement.

Not wanting to press my good fortune, I kept the run to 10 miles in 1 hr 14 mins.  Hitting it again this afternoon after work for 90 mins, then taper for the remaining five days before the race.  If the leg is in fact done bothering me, I like the idea of running well in NM; after all, I have a perfect record in the state (ok, so one race, but I won it, so I'll ride that wave until it's a thin ripple of water barely able to roll the last pebble up the beach before ebbing back into the depths, because, unlike the methodical repetition of waves, it's a rare and bright occurrence that must be lacquered in memory).

Deadman

Shoe-horned my way into the sold out Deadman Peaks Trail 50 Miler on Oct 23 down in New Mexico. I had been looking at this event for a while but it sold out fast. Should be fun. I feel pretty solid physically and am looking forward to running there. It's an out and back course on the Continental Divide Trail. There's only about 6,500 ft climb but I'm thinking they're the jagged, grunt, short, constant climbs and the trail is difficult terrain. I've learned from North Fork not to underestimate a course just before running it. So, it'll be a tight two weeks of racing with that and the Antelope Island 100k.  Oh, and a lot of driving too!

omenonious

Blandly rolling through the last week or so. In one of those dark moods that seems to grind days to a slow, rutted path of apathy. Stepping away and looking at it objectively, I guess it's a combination of post big race, the change in weather toward winter, and general changes like moving, which I should be accustomed to by now.

I'm guessing one good long run will yank me back to a higher frequency of energy and interest. I've been maintaining with a constant dose of 8-10 mile runs mixed with recovery, especially my ankle/lower leg tendon/muscle/whatever-it-is pain. It does get better each day and I feel like I could run comfortably next week at the Boulder 100 if I chose to run it. At the moment it sounds more or less like a way to fill the hours of the weekend and holds little more appeal than to try to run under 18 hours. On the flip side, if I do it, there's a distinct possibility of dropping out unless I can swing my attitude and focus around to set the right frame of mind to do it.

Looking towards the winter months, I'm trying to come up with a new avenue of activity, so I'm not so reliant on running to keep me sane. The contenders for new hobbies are: Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing/skate skiing, snowshoe racing, snowboarding, and/or mountaineering.

Still no accurate results up for the bear 100 (2 weeks after the race) AND I won't receive my finishers buckle until thanksgiving if I'm lucky. Isn't that special. Thanks to Nick P I have a loaner buckle, otherwise I'd be calling the race director every day, "is it here yet? Is it here yet? is it here yet? Is it here yet?"

It's the weekend, so that's a good thing. Next week, new mood.

Ten Days and Beyond

Ten days after my first hundred. My ankle (front of ankle where leg meets foot) was pain free for the first time today. They, especially the right one, were swollen to grotesque proportions for a couple days after the race. Now I feel back to normal and eager to race again. The dilemma is whether to race the boulder 100 miler. With the Antelope 100k just 4.5 weeks away, I'd like to show up there strong but would really like to run boulder (boring as it may be) well. As flat as boulder is I should be fine running it and then have three weeks to get up for antelope. I feel like I'm trying to atone for a soft year, both in performance and quantity. I'm already looking forward to next year's schedule that includes three 100 milers, to be determined but with the following on the board: western states (pipe dream and WAY too expensive - someone's getting greedy!), Big Horn, Leadville, Wasatch, and Bear. Something about the 100 mile distance rings true in my soul and gave me motivation to keep running the longer distance events.

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

What is a prudent recovery after a 100 mile race? I took off five days since finishing Bear. My lower legs where they meet the ankles were swollen to the point where the elephant man would've been jealous. I'm guessing this was from my no holds barred approach to the descents last week. It took a solid three days for my ankle bone to appear again.  The oddest and most painful thing is my wrist.  I guess from holding and drinking from my handheld (right hand almost exclusively) I developed something like tendonitis.  Suppose I'll need to learn to drink from my left hand, but I boringly digress.

Regardless, I was eager to run again but realized I needed to heal a bit. Not running at all after an intense long race is like a weekend of sex with no relationship afterward; just sort of this empty feeling with only intense memories.  Well a Freudian simile (not a slip, since it was intended, reluctantly), but still accurate in its meaning.  So, with the ebbing excitement this week, I've been awash in what to do next.  I mean, why waste the level of fitness I'm at right now?  I'm registered for the Antelope Island 100k on Nov 6th and intend on doing the Boulder 100 miler in two weeks.

I got out today after the five days of stressful and boring rest.  Eleven miles, nearly the length of Mesa Trail and back.  Saw Anton and some other guy bursting down off of Fern Trail onto Bear Canyon Trail where I was running up in what seemed like slow motion in contrast to their ebullient banter and pace.  Tony was barely able to get out a "Hi Tim" as he passed by in a blur.  I doubt he even heard my greeting.

The run itself was, well, amazing.  I was a bit stiff and still sore in my climbing hip muscles and achy in general from the stagnant week but by the time I climbed up and out of Chautauqua, I was floating and excited to be out.  I doubt any training run will seem difficult again after the Bear race.  Everything loosened up and my endurance felt endless.  It amazes me what the body is capable of and can recover from.  That was a brutal 23 hours at Bear just six days ago but my body has all but forgotten what is so clear in my mind's eye.  I love that the body is dumb (or is it simply loyal) and is so malleable under the mind's grip.
